Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counselling & Psychotherapy

I offer Counselling which is fundamentally based on person-centred principles.
The therapy is attuned to your situation and led by your needs.
I'm led by what you want to talk about or work on.

You are the expert in 'you'.

I believe we all need help to understand ourselves and find our path.
I am confident that with help, we can all find it within ourselves to heal and find our own way.

What is Counselling & Psychotherapy?

The approach I offer is based on my belief that with the right support and environment, everyone can:
  • resolve their own difficulties,
  • know what's right for them,
  • find their own answers.
I offer a therapeutic relationship that provides the right environment for change to come about.

I am led by your needs, so I will adjust my way of working to suit your needs and integrate other approaches into our work together, for example if you wanted to:
  • work through difficult emotions relating to an experience,
  • understand your patterns of behaviour or relationships,
  • consider what choices you want to make,
  • work on developing strategies,
then I would facilitate you to do any of these things.

There is a great deal of overlap between counselling and psychotherapy and the words are often used interchangeably.
Psychotherapy is seen as a deeper form of counselling, exploring origins of behaviour and beliefs from earlier life and how they contribute to difficulties in the present day. Gaining understanding and insight about this takes time and so typically the work is more long term.

Relationship

A key part of this type of therapy is that you and the counsellor develop a strong and trusting relationship, through the counsellor being warm and genuine, and offering understanding and acceptance.
Feeling supported, accepted and understood, you would hopefully feel comfortable to share all of your experiences, without censoring your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and so develop a greater understanding of yourself.
This greater understanding enables you to make choices about how you want to live your life.

Trauma, Abuse, Loss & Grief

I have a particular interest in trauma, abuse, grief and loss, which is underpinned by specialist training.
I use my knowledge of how these experiences impact us and our nervous systems to inform my work. I have a deep understanding of how these experiences affect our behaviour, how we relate to others and our emotional resilience.
I am very interested in the benefits of mindfulness in managing stress and improving our emotional health and so integrate mindful approaches into my work.
I also offer EMDR, which is a powerful approach for working with trauma without having to talk about it in detail. It accesses the brain's subconscious natural healing processes.
